Cabinet officials meet NU
Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack and Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar visited western Nebraska on Sept. 28 as part of the Obama administration's Rural Tour. Following a community forum that also included Sen. Ben Nelson, Gov. Dave Heineman and Rep. Adrian Smith, the University hosted Secretaries Vilsack and Salazar at the Panhandle Research and Extension Center. We briefed them on deficit irrigation, biofuels and climate change. We had an engaging conversation and they asked very good questions about the work being done in the panhandle and elsewhere in Nebraska on these important topics.
University of Nebraska President James B. Milliken participated in the events and said, "This was a rare and exciting opportunity to have two cabinet secretaries visit the university, and our faculty did an excellent job taking advantage of it. Kudos to PREC Director Linda Boeckner, Vice Chancellor Prem Paul and the members of the research teams highlighted from UNL and USGS."
Milliken added, "The University of Nebraska has important partnerships with USDA and the Department of the Interior, and this was a wonderful opportunity to showcase it with the cabinet members. I am confident they left impressed with the University of Nebraska."
