President Hank Bounds on the
Appropriations Committee’s 2016-17
deficit reduction recommendations
No budget cut is easy, but the University of Nebraska will be a partner in navigating the state’s fiscal challenges and we have taken one-time steps that will help us manage a reduction this year. I thank Chairman Stinner and members of the Appropriations Committee for their thoughtful approach to this process. I am particularly grateful for their decision to restore unspent Nebraska Research Initiative carry-over funds into our budget. NRI has played a vital role in the university’s efforts to build competitive research programs and these valuable funds will support the work of our faculty in a range of areas important to the state.
We will work closely with state leaders as they develop a budget for the next biennium that continues a partnership that has served Nebraskans well for almost 150 years. Thanks to the state’s investment in its university, we provide affordable education, outstanding academic programs, world-class medical care and services to citizens in every county. We recognize there are challenges ahead, but I will remind policymakers that any reduction to our budget would put at risk our unique role in driving Nebraska’s economy and quality of life. We look forward to working with them on solutions that will maintain our state’s long-term momentum and competitiveness.
