Establishing new biosecurity resources

Professor, Pathology/Microbiology, UNMC Director, University of Nebraska Center for Biosecurity

Steve Hinrichs, M.D.

The events of September 11 made bioterrorism preparedness one of our nation’s highest priorities. That led experts from all four campuses of the University of Nebraska to create the Center for Biosecurity, directed by Dr. Steven Hinrichs. The Center helps Nebraska and the nation prepare for chemical, biological, agricultural, and environmental threats, as well as other challenges to public health and security.

Hinrichs’ personal areas of expertise include threat assessment, biological threat organism diagnosis, laboratory preparedness and Tularemia. Hinrichs is also an expert on the detection of bioterrorism organisms including smallpox, brucella and other organisms of public health concern such as E. coli and salmonella.
