Sorrell Center Dedicated June 26

In fall 2008, University of Nebraska Medical Center students will walk through the doors of the Michael F. Sorrell Center for Health Science Education, the newest addition to the UNMC campus and the home to the College of Medicine.

UNMC's largest first-year class in 30 years will be the first of many to receive their medical education in a building named for renowned Nebraskan physician and educator, Dr. Michael Sorrell, who began his tenure 35 years ago.

"The project was an opportunity to recognize a physician who is the epitome of what it means to be a physician," Ruth Scott said. Scott, with her husband Bill Scott, provided the largest donation to the $52.7 million project.

The Sorrell Center will ensure that great physicians are educated and given experience that will allow them prominence amongst their peers. Patient-focused clinical skill laboratories, technologically-enhanced classrooms and multi-purpose conference spaces available for continuing education are among some of the building's outstanding features, and, for the 130-student first-year class of 2008-2009, tools which will allow them to follow in the tradition of Dr. Sorrell and other UNMC physicians.

Several events are scheduled to introduce the community to the newly-opened Sorrell Center.
  • Sunday, June 29 - Public open house and tours
  • Saturday, July 26 - Alumni celebration
  • Friday, August 22 - Student reception and celebration
