Dr. Joseph Stothert
Chief, Trauma and Surgical Critical Care, UNMC

WHEREAS, Dr. Joseph Stothert is a Professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Nebraska Medical Center;

WHEREAS, Dr. Stothert is the Chief of Trauma and Surgical Critical Care at UNMC, and Dr. Stothert is the Medical Director for Trauma for UNMC’s hospital partner, The Nebraska Medical Center;

WHEREAS, Dr. Stothert was on duty at the Medical Center on December 5, 2007, the day when a gunman killed nine people and injured seven others at an Omaha shopping mall;

WHEREAS, one of the most critically injured patients, Mr. Fred Wilson, was transported to the Medical Center with no discernable pulse, having lost three-fourths of his blood because of his injuries;

WHEREAS, Dr. Stothert led a team of health care professionals to quickly stabilize the condition of Mr. Wilson, providing him with nearly eight pints of blood within 20 minutes;

WHEREAS, Dr. Stothert, assisted by fellow UNMC faculty members Thomas Lynch, M.D., and Peter Lennarson, M.D., performed more than six hours of delicate, life-saving surgery on Mr. Wilson; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Wilson was taken off a ventilator on December 7, was transferred from the Intensive Care Unit on December 9, and was discharged from the hospital on December 20;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board of Regents of the University of Nebraska expresses its sincere appreciation for the dedicated work of Dr. Joseph Stothert and his team for their heroic actions on December 5 and for their continued outstanding health care provided to the people of Nebraska.
