Shelly Sorensen
Shelly SorensenBusiness Assistant to the Dean of Arts and Sciences
UNL
Shelly has worked in the College of Arts and Sciences since 1994, and is a two-time winner of the college’s Annual Applause Award.
According to her colleagues, Shelly has been catalytic in fostering an inclusive team atmosphere among the dean’s office employees, and in fact the office has been recognized as exceptional in Gallup survey results. With Shelly in the lead, her team manages the permanent budget of the college and all of its departments. And while she is the team’s supervisor, Shelly guides instead of dictates, and mentors instead of managing.
In a written evaluation, one of her coworkers wrote, “She is compassionate towards the needs of an individual and is willing to do whatever she can to provide support. Yet she is aware that business continues, and she is able to convey this in a way that lets the individual know that they are valued as a person and a co-worker.”
In short, Shelly’s professionalism, knowledge, and sense of humor make her a university employee well deserving of this Kudos award.
Shelly is joined today by her husband Jay Sorensen, her daughter, Casey, her mother Dorothy Hurt; Richard Hoffmann, Dean of Arts and Sciences; Assistant Dean Dave Howe; and her colleagues Melissa Dow, Corrie Dolphens and Ed Schmidt.
