The University of Nebraska Board of Regents is pleased to present a KUDOS award to Jon McBride, Athletic Director at the University of Nebraska at Kearney.
As Director of Athletics, Jon manages one of the nation’s most successful NCAA Division II programs. During his tenure, UNK has hosted numerous Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference post-season tournaments, first round NCAA playoffs in 2002 and 2005, the North Central regional men’s basketball tournament in 2003, and the Southwest Regional volleyball tournaments in 2004 and 2005. This year, UNK hosted the 2005 NCAA Elite 8 National Volleyball Championships. Loper alumni, friends and fans came out to support the team in numbers that shattered attendance records. Jon’s talent, influence and hard work have been key in garnering these national honors.
Equally importantly, Jon emphasizes academic success to his student athletes. The cumulative GPA of the Lopers’ 16 athletic teams is consistently above 3.0. NCAA President Myles Brand recently commented, “The University of Nebraska at Kearney is a poster child for how to do it right. This campus has success on the field and success in the classroom. I wish I could bottle it and take it with me and distribute it elsewhere.”
Jon McBride is a thoughtful and dedicated team leader, and he brings a fantastic vision and valuable expertise to his job. I am pleased to recognize him with this KUDOS award. Jon is joined today by his wife, Karen.
