Andy Applegarth
Manager, Gudmundsen Sandhills Lab, UNL

The Board of Regents is pleased today to present a KUDOS award to Andy Applegarth, who manages the Gudmundsen Sandhills Laboratory for the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

In his job Andy handles all basic operations at the Sandhills Lab, which includes employees, cattle, and 12,800 acres of rangeland and sub-irrigated meadow. That translates into an incredible list of duties – from writing daily work assignments – to maintaining equipment and facilities – to supervising ranch projects.

Andy is responsible for employee and student safety, animal health and care, implementing range, forage and cattle practices, and keeping accurate records and inventories. On top of that, Andy also provides leadership for preparing the buildings and grounds for significant outreach activities – activities such as the annual open house, youth field days for high school students, the Nebraska Ranch Practicum, and visits by students and faculty from other universities.

Andy handles all of these responsibilities with passion and pride.

Colleagues explain that as visitors drive around the Lab grounds, they will note well-kept buildings, equipment and fences. Under Andy’s supervision the cattle are cared for properly, institutional animal care practices are followed, and research is conducted without injury to cattle or people.

Over the years the Sandhills Lab has grown into a world-class research and teaching facility for range livestock production. Andy is an integral part of that success.

With Andy today are the following guests: his wife, Binda, his daughter, Trentee, his son, Dain, and his supervisor, Jerry Volesky.

Please join me in thanking Andy Applegarth for his contributions to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the Gudmundsen Sandhills Lab.
