Don Wellensiek

Don has been a member of UNK’s Facilities Management and Planning staff since August 2004. A UNL alum, he holds the position of event/ moving team leader and his responsibilities fall into three major categories. The first, and he admits his favorite, is setting up, preparing for and taking down special events such as Blue and Gold Welcome Week, the International Food Festival and UNK commencement. “I work with small groups of less than 10, to large events involving several thousand. I like to think I do my best no matter how large or small the event may be. I consider myself an ambassador for UNK,” he says. Since he is often the first UNK representative a visitor meets, he is just that. Secondly, Don serves as “asset disposal” manager, which involves overseeing UNK’s surplus inventory and coordinating the annual surplus auction. He describes his third major area of responsibility simply as “moving.” He moves items that are to be placed in surplus inventory or disposed of; he assists departments with moving furniture and equipment; he moves old furnishings out and new furnishings in. Though often physically demanding, colleagues agree that he does it with an extremely positive, helpful, upbeat attitude.

Beyond his role as event/moving team leader, Don was selected as a member of the first “Leadership UNK” class and has presented at several meetings. He is a newly elected representative to UNK Staff Senate, has been involved with the new employee mentoring program and has been a volunteer for athletics and other campus activities.
