“The budget package advanced by the Appropriations Committee would allow the University of Nebraska to achieve several key objectives: meet core operating needs, keep tuition affordable for students and families, and advance multi-campus initiatives that grow Nebraska's economy. Chairman Mello and members of the Committee balanced many priorities and I am grateful for their hard work and support for the important role the university plays in the state’s success.
“In particular, the Committee’s support for the Health Sciences Education Complex in Kearney and a new UNMC-UNO biomedical technology institute represents important investments that will help us meet workforce needs, expand educational opportunities and foster new public-private partnerships across the state. Not only do these projects address critical challenges facing Nebraska, they provide a significant return on the state's investment. Additionally, with the support recommended by the Committee, the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture would be able to build on its impressive momentum in serving students and meeting the needs of Nebraska agriculture.
“Finally, the Committee’s strong support for the UNMC iEXCEL project is a vote of confidence in the potential this initiative has to transform the way medical education is delivered in Nebraska and beyond. We anticipate state funding for iEXCEL would be leveraged several times over with private donations.
“We look forward to discussing our support for the Committee’s budget with policymakers in the weeks ahead.”
