It is my pleasure to present a KUDOS award today to Michelle Hamaker, Director of Police and Parking Services at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. Michelle has been part of the staff since 1997. She has previously been recognized as UNK Employee of the Month.

It is Michelle’s overall responsibility to provide a safe campus environment. The specifics of that job reach far and wide and include law and campus policy enforcement; cooperation with other law enforcement agencies; staff training and supervision; emergency preparedness; serving on UNK’s Emergency Operations Team; compliance with local, state, and federal regulations; and grant writing and administration. In addition, Michelle played a lead role in a Kearney-wide emergency drill that provided the city an opportunity to test its emergency operations center and the campus to test its response plan. She has supervised campus emergency drills, increased the number and visibility of campus officers and has upgraded officer safety. She also supervises UNK’s response to Cleary Act audits; and has been instrumental in the evolution of UNK’s Alert System.
Michelle is most proud of the progress UNK’s Police and Parking Services has made toward becoming a law enforcement agency that is a true partner and colleague to city and county law enforcement agencies. She credits her supervisor, Vice Chancellor Barbara Johnson, for her support in this endeavor. Upgrades now allow space for interview rooms and evidence study, for additional officers and additional patrol cars. Salaries more commensurate with law enforcement responsibilities have helped attract highly qualified candidates and stabilized the work force.
Thank you, Michelle, for your commitment to your profession. UNK students, faculty and staff are the beneficiaries of the work you do.
